COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Board of Public Utilities issued a statement on Friday that a fraudulent scam may be targeting their customers.
According to a news release issued by the utility, the scam targeting CBPU customers uses a spoofed CBPU number and threatens to disconnect service due to a metering issue.
To remedy the issue, the scammers are encouraging people to call a +1 (800) number.
If you get a call like this, you are being told to just hang up on the scammers.
If there is an issue with your utility meter, the CBPU says they will set-up a time to meet with you face-to-face.
In addition, do not call a number that is not for the CBPU.
If you think you are getting scammed, hang up and call the CBPU at (517) 279-9531.
Scammers may use spoofed phone numbers or emails from a trusted source, automated call-out systems, after-hours phone calls or emails in order to get credit card and other information from you.
