Dr. Carl Cay Semmelroth, PhD, 86, of Coldwater, formerly of Kalamazoo, passed away Tuesday, June 13, 2023 at ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital.
The family will receive friends and family on Thursday, June 22, 2023, from 4:00-7:00 p.m. at Dutcher Funeral Home of Coldwater.
Interment of ashes will take place, at a later date, at Oak Grove Cemetery in Coldwater.
Carl was born September 7, 1936, in Coldwater, MI to Albert and Dena (Brandt) Semmelroth. He graduated from Coldwater High School and went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree in Philosophy, Master’s Degrees in Philosophy and Psychology, and PhD in Psychology, all from the University of Michigan.
He married Sara Phipps on November 27, 1958, in Cleveland, OH.
Dr. Semmelroth was a clinical psychologist with private practices in both Coldwater and Kalamazoo. He briefly taught for the Cleveland State University Psychology Department. In 1972, he and his wife opened Semmelroth Mental Health Associates in Coldwater and later an office in Kalamazoo, where he resided for the past 20 years.
He retired in January of 2022, and the Coldwater practice continues with his wife Sara Semmelroth and daughter Jean Unroe. During his career Dr. Semmelroth wrote and edited multiple books.
Carl is survived by his loving family, including his wife Sara; his five children Jean (Steve) Unroe of Coldwater, David (Joanna) Semmelroth of Quincy, Jennifer Semmelroth of Portland, OR, Miley (Tia) Semmelroth of Portland, OR, Melissa Semmelroth of Coldwater; and his four grandchildren, Julia Semmelroth, Avery Semmelroth, Katherine Unroe and Anna Unroe. He was preceded in death by his siblings Conrad Semmelroth and Ruth Gay.
Memorials may be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Michigan Chapter.
