QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – As the new owners of Corn Island are trying to work out some wetland issues with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy, the annual Corn Roast on Marble Lake will not be held this summer.
Event organizers announced on their “Corn Roast Marble Lake” Facebook page on Wednesday that “it was with great sadness that we are officially announcing that after 36 consecutive years and 19 years with our partnership with Joel Gresham, Mid Michigan Entertainment and Cornisland Quincy, we will not be hosting hot boats, bands or the annual corn roast for (the) 2023 season. We hope to be able move forward in the future however.”
The island covers nearly 27 acres. It was taken over by Santee, California based developers after they bought the land from Dale Waligora. The property changed hands this past New Year’s Day.
Access to the island and the boat slips are currently off limits to the public.
There was a failed attempt to sell Corn Island to Branch County last year. The Branch County Board of Commissioners tied 2-2 in March of 2022 on whether or not to submit a state grant application that would have been used in the purchase of the property. There would be a 25 percent local match under terms of the grant. The tie vote meant the county would not proceed with the grant process.
The action came after there were mixed opinions about the county buying Corn Island.
