BRONSON, MI (WTVB) – There will be a lot of donated work as the Bronson Fire Department’s satellite fire station is constructed at the intersection of Gilead Lake and Southern Roads.
Bronson Fire Chief Scott Wilber says Rusty Smith is donating his time to coordinate the contractors, Dan Hershberger Construction is donating labor to put up the building and Chuck Shimp Excavating is also donating labor.
The $140,000 satellite fire station was approved this week during the Bronson Area Fire Association’s annual budget meeting.
It’s hoped the construction can be done by the end of the year. Gilead, Noble, Bethel, and Bronson Townships will be funding the cost of construction.
Wilber adds they have a new tanker truck ordered. Once it arrives the old one will be put in the satellite station along with one of Bronson Fire Department two grass rigs.
According to Wilber, they will prorate the cost of the building based on how much area in each township is within five miles of the station location. He says, “We also hope to enter an automatic mutual aid agreement for confirmed structure fires in Noble Township with Tri-Township once they build a satellite station next to the Fawn River Township Station.”
The Bronson Fire Department have seven firefighters who live closer to the satellite station location than their main station in downtown Bronson. Wilber says giving them the ability to respond to the satellite station rather than the main station will reduce response times to areas south of Bronson and having two tankers will benefit the entire fire district by adding 3,500 gallons of water to their responses.
