BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – Branch County got some much needed rain on Sunday afternoon and dodged a weather bullet as storms that went through around 4:30 p.m. caused a lot of damage in Steuben County.
Branch County and the surrounding area are said to be in a moderate drought according to the latest report from the U.S. Drought Monitor due to the lack of rain since early May.
The M.S.U. Extension Service weather station at the Bloom Dairy Farm measured 43-hundredths of an inch of rain for the day on Sunday. It was the first measurable rainfall at that location in 12 days.
The weather station has measured 95-hundredths of an inch of rain during June and only 1.17 inches since May 7.
Emergency management in Steuben County reports a portion of the roof at the Salem Township Fire Department was blown off and there was damage to a wall. Structural damage was also reported to a large barn nearby and a small outbuilding was destroyed by strong winds.
Part of a barn roof was damaged near York, power lines were knocked down in Hamilton and a car dealership on the south side of Angola sustained damage to its structures and vehicles. Tree branches 10 inches in diameter were also reported down in Angola.
Wind damage from thunderstorms was reported in Berrien and Cass Counties.
