COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Monroe man who faced numerous charges following two days of criminal incidents last September was ordered to serve between nine and 27 years in the Michigan Department of Corrections on Tuesday in Branch County Circuit Court.
40-year-old Alan James Golematis entered pleas of no contest to charges of discharging a firearm from a vehicle, assault with a dangerous weapon and felony firearm.
The first two charges included a fourth time habitual offender sentencing enhancer.
A two year sentence for felony firearm was consecutive to concurrent seven to 25 year sentences that were handed down on the other two charges.
Golematis was given credit for 239 days already served in jail.
In exchange for his pleas, Branch County prosecutors dismissed eight other charges covering three cases.
Criminal charges were also filed against Golematis in Calhoun County.
Golematis was taken into custody September 14 near Eaton Rapids after a chase that went through Calhoun, Jackson, Ingham and Eaton Counties. Authorities say he was involved in a Branch County police chase earlier in the day which involved shots being fired.
The pursuit in Branch County started in Coldwater. At least four Sheriff’s vehicles were involved in the pursuit. A deputy was forced off of the road at one point but he was not injured and there was no damage to the vehicle.
According to Branch County court documents, the series of events apparently started following a dispute among family members over the possession of guns and alleged phone and text threats the defendant made.
Court documents state Golematis became angry because he thought he was the rightful owner of the weapons but he can not possess weapons because of three convictions between 2003 and 2005 for misdemeanor resisting a police officer as well as for felony charges of unlawful driving away of a motor vehicle and breaking and entering.
