BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – Most of Branch County is now considered to be in a severe drought due to the lack of rainfall since early May.
The latest report from the U.S. Drought Monitor released on Thursday shows an expansion of moderate to severe drought across much of the area.
Severe drought is also being reported in portions of Hillsdale, St. Joseph and Cass Counties as well as in the Grand Rapids area.
All of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula has been affected by the dry weather. The Thumb and the northern portion of the Lower Peninsula are considered to be abnormally dry while the rest of the L.P. is either in a moderate or severe drought.
The U.S. Drought Monitor says heavy rains in parts of Ohio and Kentucky led to some improvements in ongoing short-term drought. Otherwise, much of the region saw conditions stay the same or worsen this week.
For locations in severe drought, lawns could go dormant, crops may exhibit stunted growth or need to be irrigated more frequently, and water restrictions may be imposed.
