COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – While the Branch County Board of Commissioners brought forward a request from Public Defender Director Matt Glaser for an additional state funded full time social worker during their work session on Thursday, they questioned Glaser about the position.
Glaser said in his request that the additional social worker was needed as the result of increasing and projected caseloads. He pointed out that on average his office has represented nearly 1,100 cases per year for the last three years which did not include probation violations or personal protection orders.
But Commissioner Jon Houtz had his doubts about the need.
Glaser had this response….
Glaser felt the additional social worker would cut the number of persons who re-offend.
Glaser went on to say in his request that the position has been approved by the Michigan Indigent Defense Council and the funds are available to hire this person immediately. According to Glaser, there is no additional financial impact on Branch County for this position.
Commissioners brought the request forward on a 4-1 vote with Houtz casting the no vote. Formal action is expected during the Commissioners meeting on Tuesday, July 11.
