BRONSON, MI (WTVB) – Urban chickens are on Monday night’s agenda for the Bronson City Council after the matter was tabled last month.
City Manager Brandon Mersman says in his report for Monday’s meeting that at the June 21 Bronson Planning Commission meeting, they discussed enforcement options for a potential chicken ordinance.
Based on there not being any cost-effective ways to enforce a potential ordinance, Mersman says the Planning Commission did not recommend moving forward but it was recommended to provide another opportunity for public comment.
The City Council tabled the matter in order for the city to continue looking for a third party to administer the proposed ordinance.
Mersman said before last month’s Council meeting that the Planning Commission approved sending an ordinance to City Council based off the Portage City Ordinance with the condition that a third party be found.
He says the city reached out to a number of companies including the City’s rental inspection vendor, SAFEBuilt but SAFEBuilt indicated they would not be willing to take this on without contracting to do all of the City’s code enforcement duties.
According to Mersman, this would be a substantial cost to the city annually.
Urban chickens has been before the Council and the Bronson Planning Commission since the start of the year.
