COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Police Department will add automated license plate readers to its arsenal of law enforcement tools after the Coldwater City Council unanimously approved an agreement with Flock Systems for four cameras and data storage at a cost of around $13,200 per year.
Public Safety Director Joe Scheid explained how the system works:
Scheid called the system a “force multiplier,” noting the impracticality of stationing a live officer to monitor traffic and run plate checks 24 hours a day, seven days a week:
The Police Department will abide by an internal policy that, among other things, calls for images to be kept for 366 days to comply with Michigan records retention requirements.
