BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A 47-year-old man is in stable condition after crashing onto the grounds of the Battle Creek Executive Airport at Kellogg Field early Thursday morning.
According to security camera video from the air traffic control tower, the car came onto the airport grounds at about 3:15 a.m. According to the City of Battle Creek, the traffic control tower was closed at the time of the crash, as it is closed daily 11;00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
Ducan Aviation staff noticed the vehicle at around 7:00 a.m. and contacted airport staff, who called 911. Battle Creek Police, Battle Creek Fire, LifeCare Ambulance, Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office and airport all responded to the scene.
Police say the driver experienced an unknown medical situation, went off the road at Dickman and North Helmer roads, crashed through the airport perimeter fence, and stopped on a section of the runway.
No other injuries or damage to airport tenant property was reported, and the airport safely reopened around 10:15 a.m. Thursday morning.
