BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – Branch County is no longer affected by drought conditions thanks to the recent rainfall.
This week’s report from the U.S. Drought Monitor which was released on Thursday morning showed that Branch County was considered to be abnormally dry.
That’s an improvement from the last couple of weeks when most of Branch County was classified as being in a severe drought while the far northern part was in a moderate drought.
The Michigan State University Extension Service monitoring station at the Bloom Dairy Farm west of Coldwater had only measured about three-quarters of an inch of rain between May 7 and June 25.
But since that time, nearly three-and-a-half inches of rain has been measured at that location. That includes 1.37 inches of rain last Friday and Saturday.
Rain fell only five days for the entire month of June in Branch County but seven days of rain have been reported during July.
According to Thursday’s U.S. Drought Monitor report, heavy rains improved conditions in significant parts of Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana, with localized improvement noted in parts of Illinois, Missouri, and Wisconsin as well.
Moderate or severe drought conditions were reported this week in the Manistee area as well.
