CENTREVILLE MI (WKZO AM/FM) – A suspect wanted in connection with two homicides in St. Joseph County was killed on Sunday in what was called an officer involved shooting.
30 year old David Algarin, Jr., was suspected in connection with two shooting incidents near Sturgis on Saturday that claimed the lives of a 61-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman.
Algarin was spotted Sunday morning in the city of Sturgis by Sturgis Police officers, who began a pursuit of the suspect along with deputies from the St Joseph County Sheriff’s Department.
The pursuit ended in an officer involved shooting in a field off of M-86 near the St. Joseph-Branch County line which resulted in the death of the suspect.
It is not clear yet if Algarin died from an officer’s bullet or if he shot himself. The shooting is currently being investigated by the Michigan State Police.
Sturgis police were summoned to a residence on South Centerville Road near South Street in the city of Sturgis on Saturday night at about 10:43 p.m. on a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 39-year-old woman with a shotgun wound. She later died of her injuries.
The St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department were then called to the Sweet Lake mobile home park on U.S. 12 east of Sturgis a few minutes later on a report that the suspect might be there.
Algarin was not there, but deputies discovered a 61-year-old man inside the house who had been shot and killed.
The names of the victims have not been released pending notification of next of kin
A joint press conference of the Sturgis Department of Public Safety, St. Joseph County Sheriff’s Department and the Michigan State Police will take place in the afternoon on Monday, August 7th.
