COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The former Gillespie Funeral Home at 27 Marshall Street came close to meeting the wrecking ball several years ago.
But the 103-year-old building was saved and eventually property owner Southern Michigan Bank and Trust turned it into a seven unit apartment dwelling.
The bank hosted an Open House on Wednesday afternoon so that they could showcase the renovation of the former funeral home into Southern Flats.
After it was mentioned by Branch County Economic Growth Alliance Executive Director Audrey Tappenden during last month’s Downtown Development Authority meeting, the Coldwater Main Street Program and the DDA formally presented a $10,000 rebate award during the open house from its Building Improvement Program.
The Michigan Economic Development Corporation also contributed $750,000 to the renovation through the Community Revitalization Program.
The cost of the renovation project was estimated at $1-point-8 million.
The City of Coldwater and Southern Michigan Bank and Trust were partners on the project.
