COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Purple Week at Coldwater High School concluded on a down note for Cardinal fans Friday night, as defending Interstate 8 champion Hastings collected 528 yards of total offense, 480 on the ground, in their 52-7 win at Cardinal Field.
Haiden Simmet scored all four Hastings touchdowns in the first half – on an 18-yard run, a 48-yard reception, a 23-yard run, and a 94-yard run on the final play of the half – as the Saxons took a 31-0 lead into the locker room. A 54-yard TD run by Landon Stewart on the first drive of the second half invoked the running clock for the remainder of the game.
The Cardinals did get on the board in the fourth quarter on a 1-yard TD pass from Zach Coffing to Kendall Austin.
Coldwater was held to 36 net yards rushing; Tre Miller finished with 25 yards on 9 carries. Coffing finished 5/9 passing for 88 yards and a score in relief of starter Dracyn Foster, who went 1/5 for 12 yards and left the game due to injury. Dayton Ennis had 3 receptions for 54 yards, while Keavyn Zabonick had 2 catches for 45 yards.
The Cardinals dropped to 0-4 overall, 0-2 in the Interstate 8, and will play a nonconference game at Lincoln Park next Friday. The Saxons, meanwhile, improved to 2-2 overall, 1-0 in the league, and will host I-8 co-leader Harper Creek next Friday.

Thursday night, Coldwater’s JV football team lost at Hastings 22-20. The JV Cards dropped to 1-2 overall, 0-2 in the Interstate 8.
