GILEAD TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – Michigan State Police from the Marshall post say they are investigating a phone scam by a police impersonator who claims to be “Deputy Brooks” from the Branch County Sheriff’s Office.
Troopers say the suspect is instructing victims that they have a warrant for their arrest and a payment is immediately required. Victims are then instructed that a cash payment must be wired through Walmart. Once the payment is received, the phone number is disconnected and victims are unable to get their money refunded.
State Police are urging the public to remain vigilant and cautious to all scams. Law enforcement will never call asking for cash payment through Walmart.
