BRONSON, MI (WTVB) – The Bronson City Council approved the addition of a fifth Bronson Police Department full time officer this past Monday night.
City Manager Brandon Mersman said in his report to the Council that if the position is hired, it should reduce part-time wages and overtime significantly and could potentially be a wash provided the department can stay fully staffed.
He said this position would need to be a floater to cover time off for night and day road patrol to reduce part-time and overtime wages.
Mersman added the City has negotiated with the Police Officers Association of Michigan and the Bronson Police Officer’s Association to make this new position exempt from the “Layoff and Recall” section of the collective bargaining agreement.
The recently adopted budget included the addition of a fifth full-time police officer as requested by the Council.
Almost $78,000 has been budgeted to cover full-time wages as well as FICA and benefits.
The approval of the addition position was contingent upon final approval with the Union on the agreement.
The city plans to advertise the position as soon as possible.
