COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Two Battle Creek residents were arraigned on Monday in Branch County District Court in connection with a Sunday incident involving the alleged theft of money during the sale of a phone.
18-year-old Jamaree Jaleon West is facing charges of unarmed robbery and larceny from the person while 20-year-old Alvin Kiel Vaughn has been charged with accessory after the fact to a felony.
The charges were filed after a Coldwater Police Department investigation into the alleged theft of $450 from a local resident who was looking to buy a phone from Facebook Marketplace.
Branch County court documents indicate the parties agreed to meet but there was a dispute during the in person transaction as to whether or not the phone was real. At one point, it was alleged a passenger in a vehicle that contained four persons reached out and ripped the money away from a female who was partially in the window at the time. This caused her to be pulled down onto the ground by the force of the vehicle. The female suffered abrasions during the fall.
The vehicle was later stopped on Marshall Road and two of the occupants were arrested.
Bond for West was set at $10,000 while Vaughn’s bond is $5,000.
Probable cause hearings were scheduled for October 24 with preliminary exams set for October 31.
