COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A special meeting of the Coldwater City Council has been scheduled for Thursday afternoon in order to approve a resolution and sales agreement with Ibrahim and Khalil Abdullah for the city owned building at 71 and 73 West Chicago.
The Abdullahs have offered the city $80,000 as they want to develop the property into a international grocery and Mediterranean restaurant.
They had the high bid of four offers that were submitted after the property was listed with a local realtor. The City Council accepted the $80,000 offer from the Abdullahs at its meeting on September 25, 2023.
The City Charter requires that when public property is sold, the conveyance must remain on the table for 30 days. The 30 days expires on Wednesday.
But City Manager Keith Baker told the D.D.A. Board on Wednesday the purchasers have requested that a special meeting of the Council be scheduled for Thursday at 5:00 p.m. because the next regularly scheduled meeting is not until November 13 and the Abdullahs would prefer not to wait until then to move forward with the sale.
Branch County Economic Growth Alliance Director Audrey Tappenden says the proposed business fits with responses from surveys that were taken.
Mayor Tom Kramer said near the end of the October 9 meeting that Ryan Kinsey had increased his original offer to relocate a barbershop and put in second floor apartments. Kinsey’s original bid was $79,900, just $100 less than the Abdullahs. But the City Council did not take any action as no motion was made.
