NORTH MUSKEGON, MI (WTVB) – The North Muskegon Norsemen survived the challenge from the visiting Union City Chargers to claim their first postseason victory in a non-COVID season since 2006, 27-14 in an MHSAA Division 7 Football District Semifinal game Saturday at Fred Jacks Memorial Field.
The Norsemen threw a 62-yard TD pass on the very first play from scrimmage, but the Chargers answered on the ensuing drive, which was capped off by a 42-yard score from Riley Laird. The PAT kick was blocked, and 7-6 would be the closest Union City would get the rest of the afternoon. North Muskegon scored 12 unanswered points to take a 19-6 halftime lead and scored again midway through the final stanza. The Chargers responded with a 9-yard TD run from Landyn Crance.
Laird finished with 125 rushing yards on 23 carries, Dylan McDonald added 21 carries for 91 yards, and Crance had 5 carries for 55 yards. Elijah Payne was 9/17 passing for 112 yards and an interception. Rick Austin had 5 receptions for 61 yards, and Aidan Decker had 3 catches for 40 yards.
Union City’s season ended with a 6-4 record. North Muskegon improved to 10-0 and will host 9-1 Lawton next weekend for a Division 7 District title.
