BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – A pursuit involving numerous police agencies Friday afternoon that started in Sherwood ended with a fatal traffic crash in Indiana just south of the state line.
The Branch County Sheriff’s Department reports the pursuit started at about 4:15 p.m. after one of their deputies tried to stop a 2017 Chevy Cruze for speeding.
The chase went into Matteson Township before it headed west into St. Joseph County and towards the Burr Oak area.
It then went back into Branch County on U.S. 12 and eventually headed south into Indiana.
The pursuit ended at the intersection of 1100 East and State Road 120 in LaGrange County. The LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department says the vehicle being pursued disregarded a stop sign and was traveling at a high rate of speed when it was struck broadside by a semi trailer hauling a load of potatoes.
The driver of the vehicle being pursued was identified as 30-year-old Anthony Wayne Grant of Elkhart, Indiana. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the 2000 Freightliner Sterling was not injured.
The LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department is handling the investigation into the crash while the Indiana State Police are assisting.
