BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – Good news for drivers in northern Branch County. A bridge project performed by the Branch County Road Commission wrapped up last week.
Crews finished work on the 55-year-old Marshall Road bridge over Hog Creek after over two months which forced the closing of Marshall Road just north of Girard.
Alternate routes had to be used by drivers on Marshall, Jonesville, Girard, Dean and Herricksville Roads.
The project was needed after an inspection by Great Lakes Underwater Services found problems with the bridge’s steel pilings which led to the lowering of weight limits for trucks and other large vehicles three years ago.
Signs and message boards about the weight limits on the bridge had to be posted by the Road Commission for the bridge which was constructed in 1968.
It was the second of two bridge projects performed by the Road Commission this summer. Crews also did work on the Clay Road bridge over Union Drain #2.
Meanwhile, at last report Bell Road from Girard Road north to County Line Road remains closed following the October 17 spill of 84,000 gallons of gasoline from a British Petroleum pipeline north of Girard.
