COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch County Commissioners brought forward a request from Sheriff John Pollack on Thursday for a second padded cell in the Branch County Jail.
Pollack said in his request it was needed due to an increase in the number of inmates with assertive mental health issues and additional inmates displaying self harming tendencies.
Commissioner Tom Matthew read Pollack’s request which stated the second padded cell would make the jail safer.
Marathon Engineering Corporation has provided a quote of just over $24,700. There would be a nearly $2,300 discount.
The Sheriff’s Department has a federal State Criminal Alien Assistance Program grant fund balance of over $22,000 that can be used for the project.
A second padded cell was in the original design for the new jail but was cut for budgetary reasons.
Commissioners are expected to take formal action on the request during their regular meeting next Tuesday.
