COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Tuesday before Thanksgiving is a special day for the Family Division Juvenile Unit and Branch County Circuit Court as Adoption Day is observed.
The occasion provides the opportunity to highlight the importance of adoption and the needs of children in foster care.
Branch County Probate Judge Kirk Kashian presides as foster children are formally adopted by their new families.
A reception is also held at the courthouse to celebrate Adoption Month in Branch County.
While adoptions are typically completed without public fanfare, Branch County Probate Court is one of the courts in Michigan that celebrate the process publicly during the month of November as a way of encouraging people to consider adoption.
People can adopt whether they are single or married, and must have adequate financial resources to provide for a family, which doesn’t include being a home owner or being wealthy. Children being fostered can be adopted after parent rights are terminated for abuse or neglect.
