COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The case of a Coldwater man who has been charged with second degree arson in connection with a fire in the second story of his home on East Pierce Street last Fourth of July has been bound over to Branch County Circuit Court.
58-year-old Anthony Stanton waived his Branch County District Court preliminary exam which was scheduled to take place on Tuesday.
Stanton is scheduled to appear for a pre-trial conference in Circuit Court on December 4. He was charged following a Coldwater Police Department investigation.
Prosecutors have also filed a fourth offense habitual offender sentencing enhancer against Stanton.
The fire broke out just before 7:00 a.m. on the morning of the Fourth of July. Coldwater Fire Marshall Steve Trall said at the time the fire was caused over $26,000 worth of damage. It was contained to the second story bathroom of the home.
Stanton was transported by Lifecare Ambulance to ProMedica Coldwater Regional Hospital. He later received treatment at the V.A. Hospital in Battle Creek.
According to Branch County court documents, Stanton allegedly used a cigarette to light a liquid upstairs. He then watched the fire for a few minutes before unsuccessfully trying to put it out.
Fire crews were on the scene that morning for about three hours.
