COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch County Administrator Bud Norman reported to the county’s Planning Commission on Wednesday morning that plans for the 2024 demolition of the nearly 70-year-old building that used to house the Branch County Jail continue to be on track.
He said they are working with engineers right now and abatement assessments on the building are scheduled for December 18 and 19.
Norman told the Planning Commission they will take a look at what they will do with the property after the old jail is demolished.
Branch County has already gotten around $146,000 in state grants to assist in the funding of the demolition project.
It was part of over $21 million being offered by the State of Michigan to local communities to address vacant and abandoned properties.
The new Branch County Jail began housing inmates in December of 2021, marking the first time since the early 1990’s that inmates had not been housed in what was once the Maple Lawn senior care facility.
The Planning Commission did not conduct any formal business on Wednesday due to the lack of a quorum.
