BRONSON, MI (WTVB) – The Bronson City Council is scheduled to discuss a possible Social District in the downtown area during their meeting on Monday night.
City Manager Brandon Mersman says in his report for Monday’s meeting that they were approached by Smitty’s Pizza about establishing a Social District.
The Coldwater City Council approved a Social District in May of 2021. A state law which went into effect on July 1, 2020, allows local governmental units to designate a Social District and Commons Areas within its jurisdiction.
Mersman says the law was passed in an effort “to spur economic activity and provide flexibility for hospitality businesses by enabling the on-site sale and off-site consumption of alcoholic beverages in designated ‘Social District’ areas.”
He went on to say businesses would have to obtain a Social District Permit to sell beer, wine, mixed spirits, or mixed drinks on their licensed premises to customers who may then consume the alcohol within the commons area of the Social District.
The proposed Social District would include the downtown Four Corners. The area would be bordered by York and Buchanan Streets and Foy Court.
