ANGOLA, IN (WTVB) – The public is being warned once again of yet another phone scam. The Steuben County Sheriff’s Office says there have been multiple reports of telephone calls from a person claiming to be with their office.
According to a press release, the caller states that money needs to be paid in order to resolve an arrest warrant.
The Sheriff’s Office emphasizes this is a SCAM and they DO NOT call people demanding money to take care of an arrest warrant or anything else over the phone.
Sheriff Rodney Robinson says so far, it appears that registered sex offenders are mainly being targeted, but anyone could potentially be called.
He adds the scammer uses the fear of arrest to try and convince people to pay money, and there has been some financial loss already.
These calls often originate outside of the United States and the money ultimately ends up going overseas.
Because of this, the caller may have a foreign accent. Please contact the Sheriff’s Office with any questions at (260) 668-1000, extension 5000.
