LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Branch County’s representative in the U.S. House continues to be criticized over recent comments he made in support of Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act.
Republican Congressman Tim Walberg urged Ugandan leaders to “stand firm” in response to international criticism.
The LGBTQ+ Commission of Michigan issued a statement Monday in response to Walberg’s remarks.
It said they strongly condemned such statements and actions that promote discrimination, violence, and persecution based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
The statement went on to say Walberg’s, “endorsement of legislation that targets the LGBTQ+ community is not only deeply troubling but goes against the principles of equality, human rights, and dignity that we hold dear.”
According to the Commission, the Ugandan law imposes severe penalties, including execution, for “aggravated homosexuality” and has led to increased discrimination, persecution, and violence against LGBTQ+ individuals in the country.
The Hill reported on December 29 that according to Walberg’s office, reports that characterized his remarks as support for the law were inaccurate and that he never endorsed any legislation or law while in Uganda.
