COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Two Hillsdale County residents are now the owners of the former Lefty’s Lounge building.
The Coldwater City Council formally approved the $32,000 offer made by Cody Hawkes and his wife Sydney on Monday night to purchase the property at 10 South Monroe Street.
Coldwater Main Street Director Audrey Tappenden said the Hawkes have been looking for business space in Coldwater for awhile.
City Attorney Megan Angell said the City bought the property at the real property tax foreclosure auction in 2019 for $23,500 which included the back taxes. Since then, Angell says the city has invested additional funds in the property for past due real property taxes, asbestos remediation, ongoing real property tax payments, parking lot assessments, insurance and other items which brought the total investment to about $40,000.
Angell said Monday night the terms cover the first floor of the building.
The couple intend to open a specialty ice cream shop in the space that would serve home-made ice cream. They plan to be open during the summer months in the daytime and early evening since they both work full time.
The Lefty’s building has been vacant for over seven years.
