BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – School officials around Branch County didn’t waste any time on Thursday evening.
With the first major winter storm of this season approaching, all Branch County school districts announced they were closed for Friday.
Coldwater Community Schools sent out a robocall Thursday evening.
With the storm expected to move in around midday, administrators did not want to take the chance of having students on buses during the drive home when driving conditions are expected to deteriorate.
With school being shut down Friday, students and staff were given a four day weekend since many schools were already scheduled to be closed on Monday in observance of Doctor Martin Luther King Junior Day.
The latest forecast on Friday morning from the National Weather Service had Branch, Hilldale and Steuben Counties until a Winter Weather Advisory with forecasters calling for total snow accumulations of three to six inches.
Meanwhile, the National Weather Service has placed St. Joseph, Calhoun and Kalamazoo Counties under a Winter Storm Warning. Those counties are expecting a total snowfall of four to nine inches.
The worst travel conditions from snow and blowing snow will be Friday evening through Saturday afternoon. Winds are expected to gust as high as 50 mph Friday night into Saturday morning.
