COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater Fire Marshal Steve Trall says last Saturday’s fire at the Elmwood Apartments in Coldwater is an example why it’s wise to sleep with your doors shut.
There was thick, black smoke coming out of the three story building at the corner of Clay and Taylor Streets when firefighters arrived.
Trall said the fire spread quickly after it started on the ground floor.
Damages were estimated at $125,000. One resident had to be treated for smoke inhalation.
Trall said in his report the probable cause of the fire was a battery operated impact drill.
Utilities were shut off for the 23 apartment units in the entire building. It’s not known when the evacuated residents will be allowed to return.
