UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – A Union City wrestler will be allowed to compete in the M.H.S.A.A. Individual Wrestling Tournament after a flagrant misconduct call was overturned.
Union City’s Logan Mears won his 126 pound match over Bronson’s Owen Kimmons on a 7-0 decision during Wednesday nights Division Four Team Wrestling District championship match in Bronson.
But the referee felt Mears threw two punches near the end of the match which led to the flagrant misconduct call. That type of penalty would have kept Mears out of the individual state tournament that starts on Saturday.
Union City school officials appealed to the M.H.S.A.A. in an attempt to overturn the call and keep Mears eligible for the individual tournament.
Union City Athletic Director Hayley Denney says the state overturned the call after looking at the video of the match.
She said the state felt Mears used a cross face wrestling maneuver and that he did not throw a punch.
Mears is a two-time all-state wrestler and is undefeated for the season.
