COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Fire Department’s annual report was presented to the Coldwater City Council on Monday night.
Coldwater Fire Chief Dave Schmaltz says the department lost over 100 years of experience in 2023 with three retirements and others leaving the organization.
He says the department goals achieved in 2023 included the delivery of a new fire engine and the purchase of a new SCBA and gear washing machine.
Schmaltz reported the department responded to 1,351 calls for service in 2023 which was a three percent increase from the previous year.
Fire related responses rose by 14 percent from 2022, but structure, cooking and chimney fires have shown a steady decline from 50 fires in 2021 to 40 in 2023.
As for the total number of requests, around 56 percent of requests made to the fire department were for medical intervention which is below the national average of around 65 percent.
The entire report is available on the city’s web site in the packet for Monday’s meeting.
