COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Union City man was sentenced to serve 29 months to 10 years in the Michigan Department of Corrections on Monday after he led police on a high speed chase while driving a motorcycle last May.
48-year-old Brett Brooks entered no contest pleas to charges of being in possession of a controlled substance and for carrying a concealed weapon. Seven other charges were dismissed by prosecutors in exchange for his pleas. The plea agreement also calls for a mandatory surrendering by Brooks of his weapon.
He was given credit for three days already served.
Union City Police stopped his motorcycle on May 23, 2023 when they saw he had no license plate. According to Branch County court documents, officers had to exceed 100 miles an hour to catch up with the motorcycle. Brooks was eventually stopped on M-60 east of Nine Mile Road.
A probable cause affidavit stated officers found a loaded handgun, brass knuckles, ammunition and methamphetamine.
Court records show the criminal record for Brooks goes back to 1996. He has been convicted three times for felony assault with a dangerous weapon. Brooks has also been convicted for breaking and entering, fleeing from a police officer and meth possession.
