COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Detroit woman has been charged with three counts by Branch County Prosecutors after she allegedly supplied methamphetamine to a Lakeland Correctional Facility inmate that authorities say killed him.
24-year-old Dezaray Shenique Brown-Bobo is facing charges of delivery of a controlled substance causing death, delivery or manufacturing methamphetamine and bringing contraband into a prison.
She was formally charged during a Tuesday afternoon arraignment in Branch County District Court following investigations by the Michigan State Police and the Michigan Department of Corrections. The investigations started last October after 57-year-old inmate William Wilson was found deceased in a prison bathroom.
Wilson was serving a life prison sentence after being convicted in Saginaw County in 1998 on four charges including assault with intent to commit murder and armed robbery.
According to the case file’s probable cause affidavit, an autopsy revealed three balloons in Wilson’s body. Two of them had burst but a balloon in his stomach was intact and contained a white crystal like substance which was tested and found to be methamphetamine with traces of cocaine.
The cause of death was listed as methamphetamine toxicity. The report went on to say the findings appear consistent with Wilson swallowing and later trying to regurgitate the balloons when they broke and exposed him to a large amount of narcotics.
Brown-Bobo is accused of supplying drugs to Wilson during an in person visit two days before he died. The visit was captured on security video. It showed during the visit, Brown allegedly placed a small object on a plant in front of her.
Wilson reached over and took the item, placed it in his mouth and spent several minutes struggling to swallow the object.
Not guilty pleas were entered on Brown-Bobo’s behalf and a cash/surety bond of $50,000 was set. A probable cause hearing was scheduled for March 19 with a preliminary exam scheduled for March 26.
State Police say the investigation has also identified additional suspects connected to this plot to smuggle drugs into the prison. The investigation is on-going.
