WASHINGTON, D.C. (WTVB) – The U.S. House has approved a bill on a vote of 352-65 that could lead to the forced sale or nationwide ban of social media app TikTok.
The legislation known as Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act requires the Chinese-owned parent company of TikTok, ByteDance, to sell the app within 180 days or it would be banned from U.S. app stores.
Michigan 5th District Republican Congressman Tim Walberg was among those voting yes.
He said in a statement released by his office, “”Foreign-controlled social media platforms, like TikTok, pose a significant national security threat according to experts. Today’s overwhelmingly bipartisan vote reflects an urgency to prevent adversaries from spying on Americans and abusing their personal data. If this legislation is enacted, TikTok will be forced to either break off its connection with the CCP or face removal from app stores in America.”
Republicans voted in favor of the bill 197-15 while Democrats said yes by a margin of 155-50. One Democrat voted present.
