QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – The revolving door at the Quincy Police Department continued this week with the sudden resignation of Chief Mike Kolassa and now there is talk the department will be disbanded.
Kolassa submitted a brief resignation letter to Village Manager Brittany Butler on Tuesday. He did not indicate why he was stepping down or what his future plans were.
Quincy’s budget for 2024-2025 which included funds for the police department was adopted by The Village Council on Tuesday night. They are scheduled to discuss the future of the department during their monthly meeting on April 16.
When fully staffed, the Quincy Police Department consists of a Chief, three full time officers and two reserve officers.
After being fully staffed last September, the department is down to officer Kasey Cappela.
Branch County Sheriff John Pollack says at Butler’s request, his department will assist with coverage while the Village Council figures out a remedy to the situation. The Michigan State Police will also be assisting.
The addition of six Sheriff’s Department deputies in 2024 maybe a reason Quincy has had trouble holding onto officers. Deputy Cameron Thompson started work for the Sheriff’s Department in December after leaving Quincy Police.
The village also lost a $24,000 revenue source about a year ago when Quincy Township terminated its police coverage contract.
Kolassa had been the Quincy Police Chief since August of 2022. He previously served as a lieutenant with the Albion Public Safety Department.
Kolassa succeeded Jeremy Burch who serve as Quincy Police Chief for five years.
