COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch County Drain Commissioner Mike Hard found out recently the mouth of the Coldwater River is under the control of the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy and not the county as he first thought.
Hard was making plans to dredge the river before the start of boating season but he found out from his attorney the state has control.
The check was made by the attorney after property owner Dean Genter told County Commissioners during their March 12 meeting the channel should be opened to 30 feet, not the 20 feet that Hard was proposing.
Hard says the property owners can approach EGLE if they want the dredging work done.
He adds it would be a lengthy and costly process for the county to establish that portion of the lake as a drain since they would have to start all over again.
