COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Sherwood couple is facing charges for allegedly misusing a debit card belonging to an elderly couple who lived near them.
47-year-old Kory Olmstead and his 43-year-old wife Jennifer have both been charged with four counts of stealing or retaining without consent a financial transaction device.
They entered not guilty pleas to the charges during a Branch County District Court arraignment on March 18.
According to court documents, the Branch County Sheriff’s Department received a fraud complaint from Adult Protective Services on February 3, 2023 which was a month after a conservator was appointed for the wife. The conservator noticed numerous charges on bank statements for the couple that were said to be suspicious after they gave a debit card to the Olmsteads to buy groceries.
Jennifer Olmstead said they always returned the card with the receipt and never used it other than for groceries. The conservator claims there were numerous charges at restaurants, bars, liquor stores and the casino that don’t appear to be made by the elderly couple.
According to court records, there were four alleged incidents between September 10 and November 16, 2022.
Probable cause hearings are scheduled for Thursday with a preliminary exam set for April 2.
