COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch County Administrator Bud Norman gave the Board of Commissioners a more definite timeline during their work session on Thursday for the demolition of the old Branch County Jail.
He indicated the old jail will be gone by the middle of August and that a Request for Proposals will be going out soon.
The County was successful in obtaining a grant from the State of Michigan last year to offset some of the cost.
The grant was part of a program offered by the State of Michigan in which over $21 million was made available to communities to address vacant and abandoned properties.
There are still discussions about what will be done after the old jail is knocked down.
The new Branch County Jail officially opened in October of 2021 just over three years after voters approved a millage request. Branch County inmates were moved from the old facility into the new jail two months later.
