COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Marshall collected 27 total hits in a in a sweep of Coldwater Tuesday at the Rotary Softball Complex. The Redhawks won by scores of 14-3 and 13-2.
In the opener, the Cardinals staked starting pitcher Mya Porter to an early 3-0 lead that held until the fifth inning, when Marshall drove in five runs including a 3-run homer from Gwen Beach. The Redhawks added two runs in the sixth and seven runs in the seventh. After the shaky start, Emmalie Hirst settled in to get the complete game victory with 8 strikeouts.
For Coldwater, Coley Burkhardt had a single and a double, Maren DeBeau had two hits, and Rylie VanAken added an RBI double.
The 13-run outburst for Marshall in the nightcap included three home runs: Brielle Kelly led off the game with a solo round-tripper off Kenzie Searing, Beach added a 2-run shot in the first, and Hayley Burdette smashed a 3-run homer in the fourth. VanAken and DeBeau had the only two Cardinal hits off winning pitcher Layne Churchill, who struck out 10.
Coldwater drops to 2-11 overall, 2-2 in the Interstate 8, and will visit Union City on Thursday. Marshall improves to 14-3 overall, 3-1 in league play.
