BRANCH COUNTY, MI (WTVB) – The dinner hour on Tuesday turned frantic as severe weather including several tornadoes rumbled through the area.
Branch County was placed under a tornado warning three times. The severe weather alerts lasted for over two hours.
According to the National Weather Service, the first tornado was reported in Colon at 5:50 p.m. where a home was damaged and trees snapped. A trained spotter recorded video of a large cone tornado.
Another tornado was reported at about the same time three miles east south east of Mendon.
A twister was reported in Sherwood at about 6:00 p.m. where a video showed debris being lofted.
Branch County Emergency Management Director Tim Miner says seven homes on Arney Road near Oliverda Road outside of Sherwood were destroyed. Trees were also snapped.
Hail measuring up to four inches in diameter was reported in both Leonidas and Union City at around 6:10 p.m..
There was also hail one-and-a-half inch hail reported in Coldwater at 6:17 p.m..
A tornado was also reported near 200 West just north of U.S. 20 in Steuben County at 6:22 p.m.. Hail measuring up to three inches was reported at Hudson, Indiana at 7:09 p.m..
There was a report of one-and-three-quarter inch hail in Hillsdale at 7:43 p.m..
The severe weather finally cleared the area just after 8:30 p.m..
