SHERWOOD, MI (WTVB) – The National Weather Service says a tornado that caused a considerable amount of damage in the Sherwood area Tuesday evening was consistent with EF2 damage and estimated winds of 130 mph.
Since the track is not finalized with damage in St. Joseph County, the NWS says final rating and track details will not be released at this time. A survey team plans
to assess St. Joseph County on Thursday.
St Joseph County Emergency Management has been assessing damage in a swath from roughly south of Centreville northeast to north of Colon and to the St. Joseph/Branch county line.
Branch County Emergency Management Agency officials and the NWS completed the survey of damage in northwest Branch County from Havens Lake northeast to south of Union Lake.
Meanwhile, a brief secondary tornado developed at Union Lake just after 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening as the larger tornado dissipated northwest. It was labeled as a EF-1 tornado with top speeds of 95 mph. It was on the ground for about a minute. Its path was a mile long with a maximum width of 100 yards. There was some evidence of larger rear flank downdraft wind damage in between tracks and just north and east of Union Lake.
There were also numerous reports of funnel clouds from west of Angola to north of Angola including in the area of Crooked and Loon Lakes. Video footage confirms a brief touchdown north of West 100 North and west of West Landis Road, likely over an open field. No damage was found in the area, resulting in a EF-U rating.
