COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Branch County Sheriff’s Department was able to use their drone in the aftermath of the devastating May 7 tornados which caused a significant amount of damage in the Sherwood area.
Detective Sergeant David Fillmore is the Drone Coordinator for the Sheriff’s Department. He said they used it at first to see what the track of the tornado was.
They had to work with emergency management officials and the National Weather Service.
Fillmore says the Sheriff’s Office work in the Sherwood area is pretty much done.
The use of drones for the Sheriff’s Office was studied for several years before becoming a reality in late 2022.
Several local service organizations and individuals were instrumental in making the drone a reality.
A second smaller drone has also been purchased by the Sheriff’s Department with some of the leftover donated funds.
