COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Another step towards the demolition of the old Branch County Jail was taken on Tuesday.
The Branch County Board of Commissioners accepted a total bid of $324,000 from Handy Excavating of Quincy.
County Administrator Bud Norman said 10 companies came to the pre bid meeting.
Besides submitting the low bid, Norman said there were other reasons Handy was being recommended.
Demolition work is expected to start sometime in June. Handy Excavating says on its Facebook page they are a excavating, concrete, and demolition company.
Norman estimated the demolition would cost about a half million dollars. The County was successful in obtaining a nearly $145,000 grant from the State of Michigan last year to offset some of the cost.
The grant was part of a program offered by the State of Michigan in which over $21 million was made available to communities to address vacant and abandoned properties.
