COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Cardinals baseball team snapped a five-game losing streak and took some positive momentum into the M.H.S.A.A. Division Two district tournament thanks to a 1-0 victory over the Sturgis Trojans on Wednesday at Lowe Field.
Coldwater scored the only run of the game in the last of the fourth as Drake Thornton scampered home on a passed ball.
Coldwater pitchers Evan Porter, Owen Tappenden and Dayton Ennis combined on the shutout.
Tappenden was the winning pitcher while Ennis worked out of a couple of late inning jams to earn the save.
Sturgis failed to score after stranding runners on second and third in the sixth inning and loading the bases in the seventh.
Coldwater will take a 15-23 record into Saturday’s Division Two district semifinal against Harper Creek at Jackson Northwest. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:30 p.m..
The host Mounties will face Parma Western in the first semifinal at 10:00 a.m..
