BRONSON, MI (WTVB) – The Bronson City Council passed a pair of resolutions this past Monday night in support of the city pursuing a couple of Michigan Department of Transportation grants.
One resolution was for work on Compton Street from Ruggles to Matteson. City Manager Brandon Mersman says the project would also include new sidewalk and ADA ramps, new curbs and gutters and 12 water service line replacements.
The cost of the project is over $483,000. The maximum grant award is 50 percent of eligible costs up to $250,000.
The other resolution was for a second grant application that would be used towards Bronson’s rail-to-trail project.
The city has already applied for a $400,000 Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Grant. The total cost to construct a paved trail is over $775,000. The city’s match would be over $375,000.
According to Mersman, the second grant to MDOT’s Transportation Alternatives Program will focus on enhancing intermodal transportation systems and providing safe alternative transportation options. The city match for the second grant would be 25 percent of the project cost.
Mersman says by using program funds to cover the match for the Trust Fund grant, the City’s out of pocket cost would drop by over $75,000. The estimate includes the sidewalks on the east and west end of the trail to connect to existing parks.
