COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – With abatement work wrapping up yesterday, Branch County Administrator Bud Norman says demolition of the old Branch County Jail should begin this Friday or next Monday.
The Branch County Board of Commissioners in May accepted a bid from Handy Excavating of Quincy for the work. The total project is expected to cost around $340,000. The original budget for the demolition was around a half million dollars.
Norman said abatement of the property began June 17, and he expects the demolition to be completed by mid to late August.
The county was successful in obtaining a nearly $145,000 grant from the State of Michigan last year to offset some of the cost.
The grant was part of a program offered by the State of Michigan in which over $21 million was made available to communities to address vacant and abandoned properties.
