UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – Crews have been removing trees at Riverview Park in Union City after the Village last October announced they have been awarded a $850,000 Michigan D.N.R. Spark Grant for a pedestrian bridge as part of the “River’s Path: Connecting Parks, Bridging Communities” project.
This project will build the bridge over the Union City Historic Water Trail on the St Joseph River and connect the Riverview Park with the Heritage Cultural Park.
But the village says on its Facebook page it’s likely going to be next year before construction starts due to a slow permitting process through the State of Michigan and required hydrological studies.
Early plans are looking to have an observation deck and picnic tables overlooking Riverview Park at that end of the bridge among other features, such as lighted walkways through the park.
The project is totally funded through the D.N.R. grant. The bridge will be for pedestrians only.
